Situation
The Bayu Gita's manager has a wealth of information on nearby sites of interest, and can help with transport arrangements and bookings. Don't hesitate to ask the staff for information about the area. Many of them live nearby and will be able to give you an interesting insight into some of the fascinating aspects of life in Bali. In the meantime, here's an overview of the many and varied activities on offer in the vicinity of the villas.
The beach between Sanur and Ketewel is renowned as a surfer's paradise (especially during the east coast season, which runs from November to May, when the winds shift offshore on this side of the island), but beginners should beware of the strong, swirling currents. Saba Bay Horse Riding offers a special riding track (suitable for beginners) on a magnificent black sand beach overlooking the Indian Ocean and the island of Nusa Penida. The Bali Beach Hotel in Sanur has a 9-hole golf course, but golf enthusiasts can head further afield to the Bali Golf and Country Club in Nusa Dua, where they'll find 18-hole courses. Most temples can be visited free of charge or for a small donation. Proper attire is required, but many temples lend or rent a sarong for your visit. Pura Penataran Asih, in nearby Pejeng, is a charming temple housing the world's largest bronze drum.
Pura Besakih, on the slopes of Mount Agung, is the site of Bali's most sacred temple. A complex of 23 temples can be explored on a day trip from Ubud. If you're a bold and courageous bargain hunter, a shopping spree in one of Denpasar's markets, in the heart of Bali's bustling provincial capital, is an exciting and rewarding experience. Bali's most exclusive trek promises breathtaking panoramas and heartwarming encounters, while supporting lasting social change in the once-forgotten villages of Muntigunung.
Other family attractions include the Bali Safari & Marine Park and the Bali Bird and Reptile Park. An international kite festival is held every July on Padang Galak beach (just north of Sanur). Giant traditional Balinese kites, up to ten meters long, are built and flown in competition by teams from villages all over Bali. Around 7 km north of Ketewel is the village of Sukawati, famous for its inexpensive local arts and crafts market, although better quality products can be found in Ubud (art), Celuk (silver) and Mas (carpentry), all close to the villa. Covering 3.8 hectares of tropical parkland in Kuta, Waterbom Bali has 16 waterslides (including the Climax with its 360-degree loop) to keep young and old entertained. It's a great family outing, but you'll need to get there early to avoid the crowds.
